Dr William Newby

CEng FIMechE
Director and Mechanical and Materials Consultant
I thrive on problem solving and the challenge of working on a wide variety of projects. From the smallest technical puzzle to the most complex, multi-faced challenges, it gives me immense satisfaction to find practical, elegant, actionable solutions to real-world problems. NEAT’s customers always benefit from my enthusiasm and persistence, no matter what the challenge.

Will is a highly qualified and experienced mechanical engineer, with particular expertise in materials and testing. With a PhD from the University of Exeter, where he was also a Research Fellow and Laboratory Manager, Will has more than a decade’s commercial experience which he applies to a wide range of projects with NEAT.

Will’s creative approach to engineering has led to the design of several ingenious testing and investigation processes, including specialist rigs and equipment. His material science expertise and mechanical engineering experience make him a go-to consultant – both for problem solving within challenging projects and for expert opinion and reporting.

In addition to NEAT client project work, Will spearheads the company’s in-house R&D division.

Claire Newby

CEng MIMechE
Director and Mechanical Engineering Consultant
One of the best things about my work is that the process of leading and conducting failure investigations is the same, regardless of the product, material or industry. Applying my expertise alongside the proven principles of engineering investigation means that NEAT’s clients get the best quality work, culminating in reporting that has actionable impact.

Claire is a specialist mechanical engineer, with a strong background in rotating equipment, with experience across operators, consultancies and OEMs. Claire has a broad experience of leading complex failure investigations for claims with a value of £100m+, and can facilitate root cause analysis projects across a range of sectors.

Claire also brings extensive experience in business and personnel development, having held leadership positions for Siemens, and having been elected to voluntary leadership roles with significant responsibility for the IMechE, promoting good governance and supporting younger members.

Supporting our local community

Together, Will and Claire are directors of the not-for-profit Surrey Hills Baby Clothes Library. This essential service supports parents of babies and toddlers – including preemie babies – supplying clothing on a loan basis.

The initiative aims to reduce consumption of brand-new baby clothes, helping parents to save money and support sustainable living. So far, more than 100 families have used the clothing library, saving around 1 tonne of clothing waste.
